Let’s face it, the default controls in Fortnite for mouse and keyboard absolutely suck: They don’t optimise for building, one of the key parts of the game, at all. This is of course something you’ll want to fix quickly, but which keys do you bind them to? This guide will go over the key bindings and PC settings you should consider changing, but will also detail some recent changes to screen settings that you should be aware of.
With the game being the global sensation that it is, there’s a lot to learn about not only getting that all-important “Victory Royale”, but also the changes to the map as the seasons progress, and the challenges you can seek to complete. Head over to our Fortnite guide hub for every single thing you need to get you started, including links to other areas of our guides series such as our tips for all the Fortnite week 6 challenges and our complete rundown of all Fortnite weapons and their stats.
Fortnite settings and PC keybinds guide
This guide will go over the key bindings that may work for you, as well as some useful PC settings and recent changes made to screen customisation that you should probably be aware of.
Best key bindings for you
The fact of the matter is that no matter how you play a game on mouse and keyboard, you need to find what works best for you. Most people find that the default controls for Fortnite are fiddly at best and downright cumbersome at worst.
Your primary concern is remapping the building keys to areas of the keyboard or mouse that are easy to access. By default they’re mapped to the Z, X, C, and V keys, which is not practical during a tense firefight. Go into Creative Mode when you can and tinker around with various setups until you find one that allows you to quickly build. If you can build quickly the structures detailed in our Fortnite building and editing guide, you may have found what works best for you. You should also ensure that your Edit key and Reset Edit key are similarly accessible at short notice.
Make sure your mouse has more than three buttons
Your standard office mouse, with its left, right, and middle mouse buttons, just won’t fly if you’re trying to play Fortnite to a very high skill level. You just don’t have enough accessible buttons. So if you have a mouse with thumb buttons, you should seriously consider rebinding those extra buttons to either building or weapon keys for Fortnite, because they’re some of most easily and quickly accessed buttons available to a PC player.
The mouse that I have for example, the Corsair M65 PRO, also features various DPI options along with the two extra mouse buttons, but also features a dedicated button to reduce the DPI to a small number temporarily. Normally this is used for sniper rifles to fine tune your shot, and in Fortnite, this is perhaps its only real use. Since Fortnite is so fast-paced, particularly with building, you’ll want to ensure that your mouse sensitivity remains consistent. Have a look around if you’re looking to upgrade your setup, and you can even look at our best gaming mouse guide if you have specific budgets you want to keep to.
Advanced key bindings and edit strategies
If you’re feeling extra confident and wish to experiment with something a little more high-level, consider remapping your Edit and/or Edit Reset keybinds to the mouse wheel (you should have independent keys for each of your weapon slots anyway, so your mouse wheel should be free to assign new binds). You can see the effects of what is possible with this extremely useful technique in the video below.
Pro Streamer settings for Fortnite
If you can believe it, there is a website dedicated to listing keybinds and equipment used by various Fortnite streamers and professional players. Because, understandably, people wish to know how the very best players in the world set up their controls. The resources for those are available, however I must stress that just because it works for them, doesn’t mean it’ll work for you. Maybe they have a particular set of peripherals that are different to what you have. Perhaps they have some unconventional play style that makes it easier for them to play.
To give you an example, here’s what Ninja uses, according to the above site:

Controller support
While the game does come with controller support and you may be used to controllers, it is far from the ideal solution. Seriously, even the strongest Fortnite professionals on controller are at a disadvantage compared to equally-skilled players on mouse and keyboard. The main reasons for this are the fewer buttons and input options available to you (which means certain simple actions such as switching your structure type take longer than on mouse and keyboard), and that you are simply less precise on a thumbstick than if you use a mouse. This doesn’t stop some players from reaching incredible skill levels on a controller, but if you can help it, try to transition to keyboard and mouse as soon as you can.

Stretched Resolution changes
You’re probably wondering why I haven’t mentioned “stretched” resolutions. Well the reason for that is simple: The v8.30 patch defaults everyone to 16:9 aspect ratio, meaning you can no longer give yourself a wider field of view. Naturally this means that everyone’s on the same level playing field, at the cost of some customisation.
PC settings for Fortnite
Finally, before we go, here are some more tips for PC settings you should tinker with in Fortnite.
Make sure that Turbo-Build is on by default. This allows you to just hold down the mouse button when building structures or switching structure types.
Most streamers have Run by Default turned on, which is very much recommended since there’s no stamina gauge in the game, and you’re going to spend much more time running than walking.
It is widely recommended to set your mouse sensitivity to somewhere less than 0.1 and ensure your X and Y sensitivity are the same. Tinker around with this to see what works for you. If you find yourself flicking your mouse too far or too little, then adjust and repeat until you’re satisfied.
A majority of players tend to have their resolution and view distance at the highest, then set all their other graphics options to low in order to boost their performance and ensure that their frames per second remain as consistently high as possible without putting themselves at a disadvantage.
This concludes our key bindings guide, but there’s plenty more in our collection of guides for Fortnite. And make sure you check back on this page every once in a while, as we’re keeping all our guides constantly updated with all the latest findings and strategies for all your Fortnite needs.
Fortnite
Epic
If you’ve been watching a lot of top streamers or Fortnite’s recent Summer Skirmish events, you’ve probably noticed a trend that may be perplexing at first.
That would be the fact that a number of top players are changing their resolution to be 4:3 instead of the more traditional 16:9. This results in a stretched appearance where the entire game looks wider, like someone flattened it like a pancake.
Why are players doing it? Because it’s an old trick that works in other shooters like CS:GO, where if you stretch the resolution, it stretches each individual character model as well. Stretch the character models, and you stretch the hitboxes, allowing you a larger target to shoot. This is supposed to give a competitive advantage, which is why you see a lot of streamers doing it.
Except it might not actually work.
It turns out that the stretching may work differently in Fortnite than it does in CS:GO, and all these streamer may just be experiencing a placebo effect, thinking that it helps them.
As u/wictor1992 shows in this image, CS:GO simply makes its characters wider when it stretches, so it does actually increase the hitbox. But when Fortnite does it, it’s making characters wider, but also shorter because it increases the vertical FOV, and this may actually result in an overall smaller hitbox, despite what many players think. There may be some to disagree on this issue, but it’s likely hard to test empirically.
Fortnite
Epic
This trend needs to die for two reasons.
One, if it is or could be a competitive advantage, it should probably be banned from high stakes events like Summer Skirmish which has hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars on the line. The only competitive advantage should be skill, not screen resolution.
Two, whether it is or isn’t an advantage, it is simply god awful to look at.
When Summer Skirmish kept panning to players using the stretched screen (I’d say it was close to half, last time), I felt seasick, and I know I wasn’t alone, as Twitch chat was screaming the same thing every time. I suppose if you play long enough you might get used to this resolution, but as an observer, watching in this mode is a recipe to make your eyes hurt, and it very much damages the enjoyment of the event itself.
Past this, I simply cannot watch any streamer streaming even outside of events if they’re using this stretched resolution, so they might want to consider how this tactic might be losing them viewers for no real benefit. It’s just horrible to try and watch a game smashed down like this, and Epic should ban it at least in its own events, if not for the competitive aspect, then because it looks awful and makes the production value of the event look far worse than it actually is.
I’m not saying Epic should remove 4:3 resolution from the game or anything like that, but it would be helpful if they could come out with a statement saying that no, this does not actually increase hitbox sizes, so maybe everyone will stop doing it. And if it does? Fix it so that it doesn’t.
This is far and away the most irritating trend in Fortnite streaming right now, and the sooner it dies, the better it’s going to be for everyone.

How to Get Stretched Resolution on PC & Consoles in Fortnite
Fortnite players looking for competitive advantages have popularized stretching screen resolutions, most notably Team Liquid Fortnite. Since that time, it’s become a go-to tactic for players ranging from esports pros to streamers to casual players looking to improve their game. Here’s how to get stretched resolution on PC & consoles in Fortnite.
First, it’s worth noting that stretching your screen resolution doesn’t have any impact on player hitboxes. Just because the image is wider, don’t expect easier headshots. Stretching your screen resolution is simply a preference, and it may or may not help your performance.
The practice has been used for many years in the Counter-Strike GO scene, and even before that during the days of version 1.5 and 1.6, where players would play with low resolutions to make enemies appear larger onscreen.
And that’s effectively what stretching your resolution does: it changes the field of view slightly and makes enemies appear a little larger onscreen. You sacrifice quality for larger enemies onscreen.
If this sounds like something you’re interested in, here’s what you need to do:
How to Stretch Resolution
PS4 Fortnite Stretched Resolution
Press the PS button to access your home menu
Scroll across to Settings
Select Sound and Screen
Select Display Area Settings
Shrink your screen size down
If you want a full stretch similar to PC games, you’ll want to access “Video Output Settings” and change the resolution to either 480 or 720p (down from the 1080p you likely have now).
Xbox One Fortnite Stretched Resolution
Press the home button, access settings, scroll down to Display & Sound, then Video Output
From here, access Advanced, then Video Fidelity and Overscreen, and change Auto Detect” to DVI.
No change your Color Depth” to 24 bit and the Color Space to PC RGB.
Now going back to Video Output, you’ll notice there is a 640×480 option. Change to this.
The alternative way to achieve a stretched resolution without having to muck around with your console settings is to use a TV remote. You’ll need to access your TV display settings and find the widescreen mode to stretch the resolution out (rather than having it “fit to screen size”). Different TV brands have this setting in different areas and sometimes have different names for it, though.
PC Fortnite Stretched Resolution
Access your Fortnite settings in-game and make the following changes:
Window Mode: Full Screen
Display Resolution: 1920×1080 16:9
Frame Rate Limit: 120 FPS (depends on monitor quality)
Quality: Auto
3D Resolution: Highest
View Distance: Epic
Shadows: Off
Anti-Aliasing: Off
Textures: Low
Effects: Low
Post Processing: Low
Vsync: Off
Motion Blur: Off
Show FPS: On
Now follow these steps:
Close Fortnite and press the Windows key. Type “%Appdata%” and hit enter.
In the window that just popped up, click AppData (on the toolbar path), then local> Fortnite> Saved> Config>Windows Client. You’ll see a file called GameSettings.
Right-click GameSettings, select Properties and make sure Read-Only is off. Click ok and open the config file.
In the doc, find the resolution settings ResolutionSizeX=1920, ResolutionSizeY=1080, LastUserConfirmedResolutionSizeX=1920, LastUserConfirmedResolutionSizeY=1080. Change the X axis to 1280.
Now find DesiredScreenWidth (format for all four is the same as above) and make the same changes (change X axis to 1280 down from 1920).
Save your config file, close it, then right-click the file again and re-check the “Read Only” box. Apply, close.
Now it’s time to open your graphics card client, such as the Nvidia control panel, which we’re using for this walkthrough (it may be slightly different for AMD users). You’re wanting to access the customize feature and set up a custom resolution. The resolution you want to change it to is the same we’ve been using above (1080×1280).
You then need to go to “adjust desktop size and position” (Nvidia control panel) and make sure “Scaling” is set to “Full Screen” and “override the scaling set by games and programs” is unticked.
Go back to “Change resolution” and change to your custom resolution.
Close your control panel, open Fortnite, play a single game, then close Fortnite.
Re-open your Nvidia control panel. Go to “Change resolution” and change back to native resolution. Now your resolution will change back to normal but will be stretched when playing Fortnite.
So there you have it. That should be everything you need to know about how to get stretched resolution on PC & consoles in Fortnite. For more useful tips and tricks on the game, check out our wiki page.
Stretching the resolution is starting to get popular in the Fortnite community. It was started with games like Counter Strike Global Offense and now it has made its way to the Fortnite Battle Royale. A lot of players are getting benefit from it and if you stretch the resolution of your Fortnite as well, then refer to the guide given below: Settings for Fortnite: Before getting started, make sure your Fortnite game is in Fullscreen mode. Now before you change settings of your video card, you need to first change the settings of Fortnite Battle Royale. So, in order to do so, follow the steps given below: - First of all, you need to bring up Run which you can either do be going to the windows menu or you can press the Windows Key plus R button and that will bring up the Run. If you have the Windows 10, you can just type the next part without having to do this.
- Now you need to type %localappdata% in the search bar and then hit the Enter button. - Now find the folder of FortniteGame and then click on it.
- Now go to the saved folder and open it - Now open the Config folder. - Once you are in the Config folder, go to the folder that says WindowsClient. - Open the GameUserSettings.ini file.
In that file you need to change the following options: - ResolutionSizeX=1920 - ResolutionSizeY=1080 - LastUserConfirmedResolutionSizeX=1920 - LastUserConfirmedResolutionSizeY=1080 You can change these resolutions to the particular resolution you want to try; Myth is using the 1440x1090 which may be a good spot for you as well if you have a monitor with 1920x1080 resolution as most people use this resolution. Here, X is width and Y is height.
Nvidia Settings: Once you are done with the Fortnite settings, you need to change the Nvidia settings as well. Open the Nvidia control panel which is usually found in the taskbar and then do the following things: - Click on the Change Resolution button. - Now click on Customize. - Check the “Enabled resolutions not expose by the display” box. - Click on Create Custom Resolution. - Now add the custom resolution through this screen.
- You may now see a clickable option for the resolution you have created in the Customized area. - Check that box. - Now click on the Adjust Desktop Size and position in the left sidebar. - Check “Full-Screen” option under the scaling and then choose custom resolution under the Preview and click Apply. This is it; now you will be able to run Fortnite on a stretched resolution. The Advantage of Stretched Resolution: There are two primary benefits of stretching the resolution. The first benefit is that the characters will appear bigger on the screen so you will find it easy to shoot them. The second benefit is that your FPS will be improved a bit. So if you are running a low powered computer, you may get a slight boost in performance.
The best settings for Fortnite to achieve higher than usual FPS is relatively easy to attain due to the game’s decent and regular optimization. It also helps that the game is friendly on most computers since it doesn’t ask for too much hardware muscle. Best Settings for Fortnite – Graphics Options
Take the time to check and adjust easy item in this list and see if you experience an increase in smoothness and stability. Use the specified options as a baseline and test them in-game, while gradually increasing or decreasing one or the other to achieve perfection.
The menu can be accessed via the gear icon in the upper right corner and choosing Video Settings.
Fullscreen – Fullscreen mode is always recommended, so your PC’s resources are dedicated to the game itself.
Display Resolution – the title merely requires 1920 x 1080 for everything to be visibly clear, so you don’t need to push for 1440p or 4K monitors to achieve a significant visual experience.
Set Frame Limit to Unlimited – Doing this will allow the game to render beyond 60FPS if you have achieved the best settings for Fortnite.
View Distance – View distance is essential for sprawling environments like in Fortnite and PUBG, but it isn’t as crucial in this title to gain an advantage. Setting this option to medium already allows the screen to show the most distant enemies.
3D Resolution – Always match this to your monitor’s native resolution
Shadows – It is best to set Shadows to low or completely turn it off since it doesn’t affect gameplay save for adding eye candy. This aspect consumes a lot of GPU power and RAM, so expect a massive increase when turned off.
Textures – setting textures to medium is the perfect baseline to check if your rig will allow you to enjoy competitive gaming settings. You can turn this up or down depending on the resulting FPS output and its stability.
Anti-Aliasing – Medium is once again the recommended setting for Anti-Aliasing since it provides the perfect balance between performance and visuals.
Effects – Set Effects to low for FPS stability.
Post Processing – Determines how long visuals and objects are fully rendered; not that important for fast-paced gameplay.
V-Sync – Only opt for V-Sync if you experience stuttering, and you cannot rely on G-Sync or FreeSync to alleviate issues.
Motion Blur – Turn this off since it can add a disadvantage when trying to spot while on the move.
Show Grass – Turning this option off provides an advantage by making enemies easier to spot
Show FPS – This adds an FPS counter overlay to the game, ensuring you can monitor how stable your frames are throughout the session

Gaming Performance Using the Best Settings for Fortnite
After taking the time and effort to apply these tweaks, we found that our GTX 1060 GPU-based test best was able to achieve an average of 120FPS easily. By default, the game ran an average of 80FPS without these adjustments meaning the game can be easily manipulated to maximize a 144Hz monitor. Competitive titles like Fortnite are best played on high refresh rate displays to avoid blurring and stuttering that can hinder success.
Results may vary between several builds, so we only recommend using the Best Settings for Fortnite specified in this guide as a baseline. It can get tedious and frustrating, but continually adjusting each of the graphics settings listed above will be beneficial in the long run. The guide applies to 1920 x 1080 monitors, so if you want to climb to 1440p and 4K, make sure that you scale your GPU and settings as needed.
